It All Adds Up for UCLA
When UCLA accepted 6,000+ new international students, CORT was ready to help welcome them home.
The Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars (DCISS) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is home to more than 6,000 international students and scholars. Many of their international students are living in the U.S. for the first time and they were unsure how to find a home in their new country. Finding an apartment – let alone furnishing one – proved a daunting task.
The Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars sought a solution to make an empty apartment in a new country feel a little more like home and ease the transition to the U.S. for over 6,000 students facing an unfamiliar language, location and culture. For many of these students, this was the first time they traveled to the United States. In addition to traveling to an unfamiliar location, they were faced with the challenges of starting a new school and moving to a new place all at once. Many institutions typically do not have the resources to provide off campus housing assistance, leaving students to find their own housing.
Working with DCISS, CORT developed a furnished housing program offering high-quality furniture, flexible lease terms and fast delivery. CORT created two affordable packages, for one-and two-bedroom apartments, including bedroom, living room and dining room furniture. This allowed DCISS to quickly and effectively meet the needs of their students. Students are now able to immediately settle into comfortable, convenient and cost-effective housing, rather than facing the hassles of apartment hunting, or costly hotel stays.
As part of its outreach program, DCISS developed relationships with corporate partners to help students with the transition process. The Center selected CORT to help students furnish their apartment based on the high quality of the furniture, the flexible lease terms and CORT's ability to deliver furniture on short notice.
"After careful financial consideration of purchase and storage versus renting the necessary furniture to meet our needs, we decided to rent."
-Jason Walley, Director of Sales, UCLA Housing and Hospitality Services
